Osteopathy: The Sacred Science of Healing

Dr Andrew Taylor Still was quite clear about his vision of the principles upon which Osteopathy stands and regarding the path the Osteopath must take to allow this science of healing to realize it’s potential. So I have always taken to heart the definition he offered of his discovery. Osteopathy, he told us, is “not a war for conquest, popularity or power. It is an aggressive campaign for Love, Truth, and Humanity.” Here, then, are the practical and trusted reference points which have guided me in applying the “Laws not framed by human hands” in the care of my patients and in my life.

It was Love which provided Dr. Still with the inspiration for his discovery of Osteopathy. The Health we seek to find as Osteopaths is the incarnate expression of God’s Love manifest in the natural world and the living human organism. Love is at the heart of our journey and is the Light which guides our way in assisting our patients to find healing. To the extent to which our thoughts, words, and actions are infused with Love, they are an authentic expression of Dr Still’s sacred science.

Yet, the question remains, how do we provide this Osteopathic care? Dr Still told us that “To Treat” had but one meaning, “to know you are right and do our work accordingly.” And it is nature’s truths, the living principles inherent in all of Life’s form & function, that will provide that guidance. It is only when we “blend ourselves with, and travel in harmony with, nature’s truths”, that we can truly be of service. This service must be grounded in a thorough knowledge of the living anatomy and physiology, as well as, an uncompromising fidelity to ongoing learning and exploration.

Once we can see our patients as an ongoing expression of the Divine Intention, the fundamental issue of the true purpose of Osteopathy is revealed. It is our devotion to the service of Humanity, which gives meaning to our Love and Nature’s Truth. Dr Still advised his students, “We pride ourselves on the truth that we are daily giving to suffering humanity, health and comfort, peace and happiness, relief from pain, with good-will toward all men. This is the sole object of our school, and we should strive to maintain it in its stainless purity.” The science of Osteopathy ultimately derives its true meaning, and acquires its clear direction, from its devotion to Humanity.      The promise of Osteopathy’s gift will lie fallow if left only in the theoretical realm or when limited to the resolution of structural imbalance. This healing science only becomes real through its living engagement with the miracle of Life itself.

Message to Osteopathy Students:

I hope that those studying osteopathy will engage freely with people from various fields, including medical technology, nutrition, pharmacy, caregiving, health, hygiene, welfare, and physical education, to facilitate effective communication. I encourage you to find textbooks and reference materials that best suit your learning needs.

Anatomy is the foundational science underpinning all medical and healthcare fields. The function of the human body (physiology) must be studied and updated daily with new content relevant to our times. Embryology is the study of understanding the structure and function of the human body.

Let’s learn how two cells multiply to 30 trillion and transform into a healthy or diseased body. Throughout life, the division of these cells results in temporal changes in the state of cells and tissues. During this process, the pressure of tissue fluid and the tension of membranes release the driving force behind the growth of life. In adulthood, this manifests as self-regulation and healing power. It is crucial to always be aware of the healthy state of the mind and body.

Most academic terms are pronounced using the on’yomi reading, which may be challenging for modern people. Using academic terminology is a crucial turning point for students. Getting accustomed to these terms is the first step. I expect you to communicate regularly using academic language.

Finally, let’s explore how two cells multiply to 30 trillion and transform into a healthy or diseased body. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions whenever you encounter difficulties.
